Complete Public Relations job was to help increase tourism spending in Spartanburg through generating media stories in out-of-market media. To do this, we created a fulsome strategy to spark input and cohesions amongst the many agencies involved in promoting Spartanburg tourism besides our client, The Spartanburg Convention & Visitors Bureau. For example, every time we send a release to the media we also send it to a key group of local social media influencers – city government, county government, local colleges, the major art attractions, Chamber of Commerce and key corporate partners such as the Carolina Panthers – to share the information with the tags #visitspartanburg and #onespartanburg. This helps strengthen the tourism brand locally, which is key. If residents believe something, it makes it easier to enact change. In addition, we helped plan the media portion of the South Carolina Governor’s Conference in 2017 while working almost daily with CVB staff on generating stories, working on advertising copy, writing blogs, handling media inquiries and the like. While we can’t take full credit for the results since we only worked the last few months of 2016, the County did report record numbers of social media interactions and tourism dollars spent in the past year.
But the coolest part is we had a lot of fun telling the story of Spartanburg as a rising foodie town that was both hip and historic. We got to explore new shops, restaurants and breweries.
