Reedy River Duck Derby
In 2018, Complete PR was tasked with a major goal: make one of Greenville’s signature events even better through media relations. The Reedy River Duck Derby was an annual event with more than a decade of experience when its leaders approached us. The event was a fundraiser for numerous local charities with a grand splash of sending 10,000 rubber ducks over the waterfalls in downtown Greenville. People could “adopt” ducks and the ducks that finished in top places earned prizes for the owner. The issue was that not all of the 10,000 ducks had sponsors each year. That is where we came in.
We created a multi-faceted media campaign using traditional sources along with bloggers to develop interest in the event. We held a press event at a pool club overlooking the falls. We helped tell the story that this was a festival day — not just ducks going over the falls. That Spring, more than 10,000 ducks went over and each one of them had a sponsor for the first time. The next year, we upped our game (the press conference was held at a children’s hospital that was one of the groups that got funds) and more than 12,000 ducks got sponsored.
