Late yesterday, I had a crisis on my hands. My wife and I were going to the first night of Euphoria and we were having trouble finding a baby sitter. This became all consuming. I called, texted and emailed anyone I could think of who could help in this dire emergency…
Meanwhile, just 80 or so miles northeast up Interstate 85 people in Charlotte braced for a third night of protests and violence over a police officer fatally shooting a man…
Meanwhile in Tulsa, a police officer was charged with manslaughter in the killing on an unarmed man…
Meanwhile way up in Pennsylvania, one of my closets childhood friends died of a heart attack leaving behind a wife and teen son….
Meanwhile, my social media feed practically has decamped into warring side of what is right and wrong in America. Anything they don’t agree with is shamed away with rhetoric…
Meanwhile, we live in a society where we can stare at a microwave warming food and deem that it is not fast enough…
Meanwhile, a topless woman assaulted a security guard in the parking lot at Haywood Mall. Before you laugh, read the story…
Meanwhile, there is a presidential election less than 50 days away that is not about the next four years in the White House, but really how the Supreme Court will look like when that little eight-month who I was worried about finding a sitter for last night will have more gray hair than I have now.
Where I am going with this? We tend to think that everything in our lives is the most special and crucial thing going on in the world. Too often we look for the worse, and get offended when others don’t see our problem. The reality is we all have problems great and small. My problem last night was so trivial in the grand scheme of things that I am ashamed I ever got frustrated. But I also realize those are natural parts of being human.
We live in troubled times, but humans have always lived in troubled times. We also live in an amazing time in history, but every epoch in history is amazing when you look at it. It’s all just a matter of perspective.
Just some things to think about on a Friday afternoon.
