GREER, S.C. – Speaking to an auditorium full of supporters, American Party candidate Guy Furay outlined the plan that he will take to Washington, D.C. as the next congressman for the Fourth District Wednesday morning.
Furay’s campaign is focused on issues such as healthcare, immigration and gun control, but with the mix of the current two-party centric system being the main cause for the political gridlock facing the state and the nation. He cited his numerous meetings with Democratic and Republican Party elected officials who refuse to lead in fear of losing votes, instead, choosing rote offensives against the other side.
“Blame is not leadership,” Furay said. “Leadership needs to be out fixing priorities.”
Furay decided to run as a candidate for the American Party, which was founded in South Carolina in 2014, because he believes that the Americans in the middle are being squeezed by the warring factors of the extreme ends of the political sphere.
“It’s time to break this cycle that the two-party system has us trapped in,” he said. “We need leadership in Congress that puts ‘We, the People’ first, that listens to their constituents in order to find real, working solutions.”
Jim Rex, former South Carolina Secretary of Education and the co-founder of the American Party, called Furay one of the superstars on the ballot citing Furay’s 22 years in the insurance businesses and strong community involvement in Spartanburg and Greenville.
“It’s time for us to think as Americans, and not just as Republicans or Democrats,” Rex said.
Citing stats that show that 44 percent of Americans do not consider themselves a Democrat or a Republican, Rex said Furay’s campaign will strike a chord with those who feel left behind by the current system.
“Guy is the top of the spear for the changes that are happening in America,” he said.
Furay said the political divide gripping the nation is there because the two main parties can make money off of it. He quoted the Founding Fathers, including George Washington and John Adams, who spoke about the problems a two-party system would cause for the country one day.
“I believe our system is broken,” he said. “It’s time we take back the U.S. government. It’s time it works for the people, not the parties.”
